Walls — What Needs to Fall, and What Needs to Stand
The word wall can be used in two ways: as a noun or a verb. As a noun, it refers to the structures that define the rooms in our homes—bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms. These walls help organize our space for specific purposes. As a verb, wall is often used in phrases like “wall off,” meaning to close something off from the rest—like walling off a laundry room. Designers sometimes remove walls to create what we call an “open concept”—spaces that are bright, open, and perfect for connection.
In the Bible, walls served another purpose. They were strongholds of protection. Remember the wall of Jericho?
“So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat…”
(Joshua 6:20, NKJV)
Jericho's walls were famously high and thick—designed to keep enemies out. But when God’s people followed His command with faith and unity, those seemingly indestructible walls came down without physical weapons—just obedience, praise, and faith.
We all have symbolic walls in our lives.
Some walls need to come down:
Generational curses
Low self-esteem
Past trauma and failure
Shame
Lack and poverty
Abuse
Then, there are areas of our lives that we need to protect by building spiritual walls:
Our relationship with God
Prayer time and Bible study
Godly habits and disciplines
Speaking with grace
Living with integrity
Guarding our hearts
In ancient times, enemies would try to weaken a city by attacking its walls. Spiritually, the enemy does the same. But like the Israelites at Jericho, we don’t fight these battles with physical weapons. We fight with faith and the Word of God.
So ask yourself today:
What walls in my life need to fall?
What areas of my life need to be walled off and protected?
The good news? You don’t have to rely on your own strength. God’s Word is powerful enough to bring down walls and strong enough to build up boundaries where needed.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of walls—both the ones You help us break down and the ones You help us build for our protection. Give us the wisdom to know the difference. We declare that Your Word is our weapon, our shield, and our guide. Strengthen our faith and our obedience, just like You did for Your people at Jericho. In Jesus' name, amen.
